Notes : During the progress of cleaning work, I noted down all the epitaphs on each on every tomb inside the cemetery in my cemetery note book. I found all the epitaphs noted previously by the famous historian Mr.J.J.Cotton in his book a list of inscriptions on tombs or monuments in Madras, published in 1905 were all existing even today is really surprising in spite of wrath of nature and vandalism.

For the Cause of History and Heritage of Salem
We raised our voice of concern over the proposed demolition of the 184 year old Salem Collectorate building at the city centre here built in the year AD 1824. We met the collector of Salem District Mr.N.Mathivanan I.A.S, on 6-8 -2007 and submitted our representation on behalf of our Salem Historical Society for the protection of the 184 year old historic Salem Collectorate building from complete demolition.
The collector in accepting our representation said because of the strong political will I cannot help you in this regard, but I accept and endorse all your historical views in this connection. I will protect the rare historical objects such as the Great War Memorial tablet 1914 – 1919 and a memorial tablet in memory of the then collector Mr.T.L.R.Chandran I.C.S, the alarm bell installed by the British at the entrance of the record room (it is more than 150 years old) and the benchmark stone at the enterance of the collectorate campus pointing the exact spot of the mean sea level of Salem City.
Writing on top of the bench mark stone :
The top of this pillar is 918.288 feet above MSL of the sea,
This stone is said to be the centre point of Land survey of the Salem District from which all measurement starts.
The collector promised us to protect these historical objects present in this collectorate building for posterity and will be restored back to the new collectorate building.
